History |
I started reloading and varmint shooting back in 1992. At that point I think my longest prairie dog shot was just over 400 yards. I had a flat shooting 22-250 that was accurate and just changed my holds based on where the missed impact was seen.
I did not understand ballistics or the many factors it to took to get consistent hits at further ranges. Started precision shooting around 2011 with the desire of hitting a 1000 yard target. I picked up a Remington 700 in .308 Win. never had a 700 and come-on everyone needs a 700, over 5 million sold how could my gun collect be complete without one? I picked the weapon based upon what I was told i needed to hit 1000 yard targets. Snipers use a .308 with 168gr SMK, so that was my first try. Since then I have learned SO much. I started off shooting F-Class matches because I was unable to find any local public ranges that have ranges over 300 yards. Shooting F-Class gets you introduce to some shooters that are very skilled on getting rifles shoot very small groups. It takes equipment, time and knowledge to get .25 MOA groups. I shot F-Class for two summers. My next type of shooting I tried was tactical / practical matches. That is the type of shooting I still enjoy today. I started shooting some local matches. Tac match at GRRC, Princeton winter matches, Hilltop Hilton Prairie Dog shoot. I was placing near the top but then started winning a couple matches. Fall of 2015 I decided to shoot the 2016 PRS Series, this is a national series that has the top shooters across the US. My first PRS match was the Breakneck match in Nebraska. It rained, it sleeted, it snowed we saw a 42mph reading on the Kestrel! Welcome to the Big Leagues. The elements did not get to me as much as some other shooters, pays to be from Minnesota! I placed very well. Tied for 22rd place with 8 other shooters, but my slow performance on the tie breaker stage dropped me to 30th place. There where over 150 shooters registered for that event and was very surprised I placed so well. I placed in the top third at South Dakota Steel Classic (PRS) and Heatstroke Open (PRS). My teammate Marvin Hobbs and I took second place this year at the Dakota Duel. After my 3 PRS matches I was able to achieve a national ranking of 150th. I started DST Precision to help support my gunpowder habit. It does cost a little to shoot and keep practicing. That is why I also sell the D.F.A.T. it is nearly free to dry fire practice, check it out on the home page. I also sell databooks, European antler mounts and other precision related shooting products. I have helped several shooters get into the sport. Many have never shot over 200 yards and now are competing doing well. I enjoy helping other shooters and teaching them how to improve their skills at PRS type shooting. Please contact me if you would like some one on one training or have a group of guys that would enjoy learning more about mid and long range shooting. |
